By Autumn Rivers. Speed dating means you only have a few minutes to impress each person you talk to. Though it's important to be yourself for the best results, a little preparation can't hurt. Learn what to do before you use speed dates to try to find someone new.
Dress Appropriately
The company putting on the speed date event should be able to tell you if there is a dress code. If not, you should go with business casual since this is pretty standard. Try to wear something that is flattering, yet not totally out of your comfort zone. It's fine to dress up a bit more than you normally do, but wearing an outfit that you would never usually wear can be misleading and will make you feel uncomfortable.
Follow the Rules
Though sometimes you think you know right away that you have found your future partner, most speed dating events do not allow you to initiate another date during the conversation. You are encouraged to give each participant a chance during the night, and you are advised to use every second of your time getting to know the other person, not figuring out clever ways to request a date. Once the whole event is over, you can focus on coming up with cute lines to say on your next dates, but until then, follow the rules laid out for the event.
Pay Attention to Interests
While physical attraction is great, it’s the interests that couples tend to spend the most time discussing or doing. Not only should you ask others about their interests to find out what you have in common, but you should also make a short mental list of your main hobbies before the singles event. This way, if you meet someone who lives for sports while you do not know the difference between softball and baseball, you are immediately aware that it might not work between you. Of course, as long as you have a few things in common you may have a shot, so try to come up with at least five interests that you would like to share with someone else.
